Motorcycle Safety

All courses are conducted on weekends at
Western Iowa Tech Community College,
4647 Stone Avenue,
Sioux City, Iowa.

Participants must wear proper riding gear: a helmet manufactured to meet DOT standards (loaners are available), eye protection, long-sleeved shirt or jacket, sturdy trousers or jeans, full-fingered gloves, and over-the-ankle footwear.

Motorcycle Riders Course: Basic Riding Skills (BRC)
The BRC, a novice rider course, teaches the basics of motorcycle operation: straight-line riding, turning, shifting, and stopping. After the basics, more advanced skills are learned and practiced: minimum space maneuvering, maximum braking, swerving, etc. Successful completion of the course may result in your being exempted from riding the licensing skill test conducted by the Department of Transportation. Also, a number of insurance companies provide a premium discount for a satisfactory completion. The BRC is an 18-hour course consisting of six hours of classroom and 12 hours of range riding on motorcycles provided by WITCC. The class is conducted on weekends: Friday night 6-9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check with registration for updated course fee.

Motorcycle Riders Course: Skills Practice
Participants should have completed the BRC course or should be able to demonstrate skills equivalent to the satisfactory completion of a BRC. In this course, the participants practice and refine the more advanced skills learned in the BRC. Motorcycles are provided by WITCC. Four hours on Saturday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The course fee is $48.

Motorcycle Riders Course (MRC): Skills Plus (Experienced Riders Course)
The MRC: Skills Plus course was released by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in April of 2003 to replace its "Experienced Rider" course. In this new course, the participants develop a better understanding of how their motorcycles respond to various inputs. Participation sharpens the participant's street skills and "street smarts". Emphasis is placed upon risk reduction techniques, maneuvering, cornering, braking and swerving. Five hours on one Saturday afternoon from 2:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The course fee is $60.
